The Zhowe GD0999 Sad Excuse for a Dive Watch
The Zhowe GD0999 Sad Excuse for a Dive Watch

Ah, the Zhowe GD0999 with a black dial. Let’s be entirely honest: this isn't just a watch; it is a profound philosophical statement about how little money you can spend before the universe actively starts punishing you for your curiosity. We have handled some budget disasters in our time, but this unholy creation takes the crown.

In fact, it took us over ten solid, agonizing minutes just to try and set the time on this wretched thing, a process that felt less like adjusting a timepiece and more like trying to defuse a bomb with a pair of rusty kitchen shears. If you ever wanted a watch that actively fights your attempts to use it, congratulations, you've found your holy grail.

The Homage Heritage

Before we pretend this masterpiece crawled out of an independent artisan’s fever dream, let's address the luxury muse: the Zhowe GD0999 is a brazen, unblushing homage to the Longines HydroConquest. It takes the sporty, high-end diving pedigree of a Swiss luxury classic and drags it face-first through the mud of absolute bargain-bin manufacturing. It’s borrowing luxury lineage the way a toddler in a cardboard box pretends to drive a Ferrari—except the Ferrari is on fire, and the toddler is crying.

The Case

Let’s talk about the housing, which is generously described as an alloy case. By "alloy," we mean it feels like it was cast from a melted-down soda can and painted with hope and cheap primer. It’s light, it feels like hollow plastic pretending to be metal, and attached to it is a diver bezel that proudly does not rotate. That's right—it’s completely stationary, molded solid, meaning your ability to time a parking meter or an oxygen tank is entirely decorative. It is a stunning commitment to form over function, provided your definition of form is a metal ring stuck permanently in place.

The Dial and Crystal

The dial features a stark black canvas adorned with applied indices. We say "applied" loosely, because during our rigorous testing, one of the indices literally fell off and started sliding around like a tiny metal ghost behind the glass. Speaking of the glass, it's a Hardlex crystal that somehow manages to combine the scratch resistance of wet cardboard with all the optical clarity of a muddy puddle.

The "Leather" Strap and Clasp

Then we reach the strap, which is supposedly leather in the exact same way a hot dog is supposedly gourmet meat. It is a stiff, plastic-coated strip of cruelty to your wrists that smells faintly of a chemical factory floor. Paired with a cheap clasp that feels like it’s about to snap every time you look at it, it ensures that wearing the watch is a tactile punishment from start to finish.

The "Lume" (White Paint That Is Anything But Lume)

When the sun goes down, the Zhowe GD0999 pulls off its greatest magic trick: complete, unapologetic darkness. The white paint slathered onto the hands and markers is anything but lume. It doesn't glow, it doesn't phosphoresce, and it certainly won't help you read the time in a dark room. It is quite literally just white paint—the horological equivalent of holding up a blank sheet of paper and pretending it’s a flashlight.

The Movement

Ticking away inside this disaster is a mystery meat quartz movement. We say ticking because, as established, you can hear every single mechanical pulse across an entire room. It stumbles through timekeeping with the enthusiasm of an employee working a double shift on zero sleep, making sure you are constantly reminded of its miserable existence through sheer acoustic violence. As for the ticking? The tick on this movement is the loudest we have ever heard... ever. You cannot leave this thing on a nightstand unless you enjoy trying to sleep next to an industrial jackhammer playing a death metal solo in an empty oil drum.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the Zhowe GD0999 is, without exaggeration, the biggest piece of junk we have ever received. It is a hysterical piece of crap that defies logic, tortures your eardrums, sheds its own internal parts during a basic review, and redefines what it means to manufacture disappointment. If you hate someone, buy them this watch. Otherwise, run far, far away.
