Tandorio Fifty Fathoms Ghost is an October Must
If you’ve ever wanted that iconic, high-end Blancpain Fifty Fathoms vibe without having to sell a kidney on the black market, Tandorio has a proposition for you: the Fifty Fathoms "Ghost" (TD223B). For the price of a couple of decent dinners, you get a watch that looks like it just snuck back from a classified mission with Steve Zissou.
Right out of the box, the first thing that hits you is that glorious bubble sapphire crystal. It’s so aggressively domed you half-expect to see tiny scuba divers swimming around inside it, and it gives you that vintage, warped-glass aesthetic under angled lighting that is straight-up mesmerizing. Wrapped in a fully sandblasted 316L steel case, the whole thing has a tactical, matte finish that screams, "I look rugged, but I mostly just type spreadsheets."
At 40mm wide, it sounds like a sweet spot on paper, but be warned: the lug-to-lug stretches out to a beefy 50.5mm. It wears a bit flatter and wider than your average desk diver, so if your wrists are on the slimmer side, this thing might wear you instead of the other way around.
Under the hood, you usually get your choice of engines—go with the Seiko NH35 unless you enjoy living dangerously with the Miyota rotor-rattle or PT5000 lottery. The NH35 is essentially the Honda Civic of watch movements: bulletproof, cheap to fix, and will probably outlive us all. You also get a ceramic bezel insert, which is wild for a sub-hundred-dollar Chinese microbrand piece.
Of course, you get what you pay for in a few spots. The lume is... fine, but it’s more of a gentle dusk than a blazing torch, fading out about halfway through a movie marathon. And the stock strap? Let's just say it feels like it was woven out of tactical shoelaces and pure regret. Okay . . . okay it is really not that bad, but there are certainly better options out there. Do yourself a favor and immediately throw it on a decent sailcloth or a rugged rubber strap.
The Bottom Line
If you want a fun, moody, vintage-flavored diver that won't make your bank account weep, the Tandorio "Ghost" is an absolute blast for the money. Just plan on swapping the strap on day one, and enjoy having a stealthy little tank on your wrist.
